9 Amazing Oils for Fine Hair Types That Won't Make Your Strands Fall Flat

For people with thick and coarse hair types, oils are often a godsend, aiding in taming flyaways and adding back much-needed moisture to dehydrated strands. On the flip side, however, people with baby-fine hair have to be extra careful when it comes to using oils, as they're notorious for weighing the hair down or making it appear greasy (and unfortunately, not in a cool rocker-chic-Kate-Moss kind of way). This isn't to say that there aren't any elixirs out there that benefit fine hair types, though. Believe it or not, there's actually a bevy of shine-injecting, ultra-nourishing oils on the market that deliver amazing results to delicate strands. And because we're nothing if not authorities on the subject, we're sharing them all with you. For this, we tapped a few of our go-to hair gurus for their input on the best ones in the game. Ahead, find nine oils you should add to your arsenal if you have fine hair.

      Innersense Harmonic Healing Oil

This lightweight, restorative elixir for the hair, skin, and nails contains an impressive blend of oils, flower essences, and antioxidants, all of which work together to hydrate the hair and scalp, while also repairing existing damage. This pick comes courtesy of hairstylist Lacy Redway. She says she loves its abundance of vitamins and the healing benefits it provides.

Kérastase Elixir Ultime Bi-Phase Spray Oil

The first thing that sets this oil apart from the rest is the fact that it's a spray-on formula, which gives you better control during application and deposits a super-fine mist that won't weigh the hair down. New York City-based hairstylist Matt Fugate and stylist for the brand says it's his absolute favorite, and that everyone he gives it to falls in love, too. "This literally can thicken fine hair," he says, adding, "it adds shine and luster and smells amazeballs, but it's the first oil I've ever come across that actually thickens hair." (If that's not enough to make you try the stuff, I don't know what is.)

Serge Normant 'Meta Sheer' Dry Oil Finishing Spray

Another favorite of Fugate's is this one by renowned hairstylist Serge Normant, who clearly had fine-haired people in mind when he developed it based on the fact that it's designed to feel "weightless."

"Serge just knows how to make hair big and beautiful, and his oil aids in just that," says Fugate. "It makes the hair feel "finished" if that makes sense, like Blake Lively on the red carpet." He also adds that he loves its convenient size, as you can keep it on you at all times for a touch-up.

Nature's Way Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil

Unlike oils such as sunflower and olive, coconut oil won't weigh the hair down and make it look greasy (as long as you don't overdo it, that is). Cosmetic chemist Perry Romanowski, vice president at Cosmetics Corner, recommends coconut oil as he says people with fine hair tend to have problems with breakage and splitting. Coconut oil has shown to penetrate the hair and improve the flexibility of the fibers.

      Sebastian Professional Dark Oil

This luxury oil is formulated with sandalwood, cedarwood and argan oil and protects the hair from UV damage. It also happens to be one of our deputy beauty director's all-time favorites. Here's why.

"My hair is so fine that even some dry shampoos weigh it down (usually the wetter formulas that contain a lot of alcohol). But because I highlight it, and I don’t cut it very often, my ends are very dry. This beautiful-smelling stuff can go on damp or dry hair, but I like to use it once my hair is dry to smooth down frizz and add shine. Once I’ve blow-dried my hair, I squeeze out the tiniest little drop and rub it between my palms. Then I run it over the ends of my hair and whatever’s left I usually skim over my face-framing layers, which are fuzzy thanks to the fact I have a bad habit of pulling my hair back when it’s wet (which is a big no-no according to hairstylists). I also like to use it almost like a gel if I’m wearing my hair in a slicked-back ponytail or tight, low chignon."

Original & Mineral Frizzy Logic Shine Serum

A Best of Beauty winner and another favorite from Fugate, this serum-meets-oil hybrid smooths frizz and adds shine, without making strands look the least bit greasy. "It's my little-known secret," says Fugate. "The macadamia oil is rare AF because of the price and process, but OMG is it amazing for the hair." Fugate tells his clients to add just a drop or two to their shampoo for an added boost of nourishment. "Then you just rinse it out and the hair looks amazing."

Rooted Treasure's Organic Jamaican Black Castor Oil

Castor oil is typically used to deeply moisturize hair and prevent scalp dryness, but Redway believes it's great for stimulating hair growth, too. This one is best used as a "treatment oil" overnight, as it's quite thick in consistency, but once you wash it out, your strands will shine like never before. This particular one also boasts a whopping five stars on Amazon, which definitely stands for something.
