“We’re going to have some fun." Those were the first words Pat McGrath ... excuse me Dame Pat McGrath, ever said to me. For nine years, 18 seasons, I covered beauty backstage for Allure at Fashion Week in New York, Milan, and Paris. But that single moment — crammed backstage at Gucci, reeling from a red-eye flight, high on espresso shots and the Elnett in the air — is perhaps the moment I recall most vividly. My 23-year-old self was both utterly thrilled and completely terrified.

Pat McGrath is a legend, and her work extends well beyond creating makeup looks for runway shows. But that work backstage truly sets her apart from her contemporaries. For one, it's insanely prolific. She does more shows in one season than some makeup artists do in a decade, a feat that requires dozens and dozens of trunks and a moped to whiz her through the streets of Milan and Paris. Pat doesn’t have time for bumper-to-bumper traffic when she has to get to Margiela.

It’s not only the sheer volume of runway shows Pat does that make her fashion's beauty queen, though. It’s also the fact that her creations have helped drive nearly every major makeup trend we've experienced over the past two decades. The return of blue mascara back in 2012? That was Pat at Stella McCartney. Rhinestone-studded eye makeup? Pat helped usher that in with her spectacular face jewelry at Givenchy in 2014. Sublimely highlighted skin? Well, Pat’s been doing that her entire career. The technique was her well-kept secret (trust me, we begged her to tell us at every show) until the launch of her brand and, soon after, a dual-ended highlighter stick.

Not having a day off during the entirety of "fashion month" was taxing for anyone along for the wild ride. But Pat was right all those years ago when we first met. Amidst all the exhaustion and chaos, we did have a lot of fun. You never knew whom Pat would introduce you to while trying to interview her about a makeup look. I chatted eyeliner with Donatella Versace. I laughed alongside Gwendoline Christie as she and Pat recalled their club days in London. I’m pretty sure I have a voice memo where Paul McCartney pops into an interview. When Pat’s backstage she’s never looking to be the center of attention — in fact, she's usually trying to evade it. But everyone who’s anyone wants to stop and chat with her and, if they’re really lucky — like Tilda Swinton was backstage at Lanvin one season— even hop into her chair for a quick touch-up.

Pat McGrath is happiest when she gets to execute a real look for a show. With a wink and a cheeky smile, she would always give us backstage editors a heads up when she knew a major makeup moment was coming up on the schedule, whether it was lashes made from faux feathers or Swarovski-studded lips. Those are some of my favorite backstage memories: geeking out with Pat over our mutual love of elaborate makeup, sometimes sticking around until seconds before the show in hopes she’d divulge an extra tidbit about a look — like how she made the eyebrows look like brocade fabric at Dior, or how she glued dozens of false lashes together for those Bambi eyes at Louis Vuitton.

To truly give Pat McGrath's contribution to fashion the justice it deserves, you'd need to clear out a floor of a museum. This collection of 30 images is just a small example of what she’s created for the runways over three decades. They're the looks that have sparked trends, influenced the market, or simply turned the beauty world on its head for one reason or another. And they’re the looks that she’s built her namesake brand around. So sit back, scroll through, and prepare to understand exactly why McGrath has earned the right to be called the most influential makeup artist in the world.

      Christian Dior Spring 2004 Couture

Pat has dreamed up some of her most extreme looks for Christian Dior runways, like the extravagantly gilded creations she masterminded for this couture show. She called it “marathon makeup”— 18 straight hours in the making. “The Dior shows were the occasions when I really felt like the makeup had become as important to the overall creative energy and spirit of the show as the clothes, as the music, as the setting,” Robin Givhan, senior critic-at-large at The Washington Post, who has covered the collections since 1995, told Allure. “Makeup had always been a bit player to the big story, but it felt like Pat was really creating this dialogue between the clothes and beauty.”

McGrath calls the dark-lipped, cobalt graphic-eyed look at Christian Dior fall 2010 couture "a trip through the avant garden via The New Romance."

      Givenchy Spring 2010 Couture

Back when everyone was telling you to only ever play up one feature at a time, McGrath, per usual, was breaking the rules, pairing vibrant red lipstick with glossy-and-glittery smoky eyes at the Givenchy spring 2010 couture runway show.

      Christian Dior Fall 2011 Couture

An early example of McGrath's fascination with jewels and sequins was seen at the Christian Dior fall 2011 couture show with this celestial creation. You've probably seen this look — or iterations of it — pop up on your Pinterest feed or Instagram Explore page more than once over the years.

      Givenchy Spring 2012

Proof that you don't need a lot to make a major statement: For Givenchy's spring 2012 water-inspired collection, McGrath cut sequins in half and glued them along the center of the top and bottom lashes. It was, in classic Pat-parlance, "hyper-minimal major-ness." We couldn't agree more.

      Louis Vuitton Spring 2012

Not only was McGrath's Louis Vuitton spring 2012 look heartbreakingly beautiful, but it was also speckled with incredible little details. First, in a feat of makeup mastery, McGrath adhered multiple pairs of false lashes to the models' lids. Then there's the sublimely highlighted skin, a feature McGrath has basically trademarked. Four years later, she would share her secret when she launched the Pat McGrath Labs Skin Fetish 003 Kit.

      Christian Dior Fall 2012 Couture

For this study in neons, McGrath created a color-blocked look on both the eyes and the mouth and managed to make a major statement even amongst the richly-printed clothes of the Christian Dior fall 2012 couture show.

      Christian Dior Fall 2013

Echoing the illustrations in the clothes, McGrath created a makeup look for Chrisitan Dior that was "a tribute to Warholian beauty: modernity and lightness with a metallic wing and a beautifully berry lip," she explains.

      Christian Dior Fall 2014

Just another example of McGrath's innovativeness: For the Christian Dior fall 2014 show, she applied real latex paint to lids. "First, we drew on the shape with a pencil," she explained backstage before the show. "Then, paint the latex on and wait for it to dry. Right before it's fully dry, you push the pigment on top. The latex paint literally swallows the pigment and gives you this ultra-glassy finish, like a mirror."

      Alexander McQueen Fall 2014

"Fiercely feathered. What more can I say?" McGrath proclaimed of this Alexander McQueen look. Not only did she stick feathers to the models' brows, look closely and you'll see tiny plumes along their gold-rimmed lashes, too.

      Christian Dior Spring 2014

McGrath's artistry knows no boundaries. Here, for Christian Dior, she topped brows with various layers of copper-toned gold paint, gold pigment, and gold glitter to replicate the luxe texture of brocade fabric alongside a thin, contrasting line of brilliant aqua.

      Givenchy Spring/Summer 2014

McGrath has always experimented with makeup-as-jewelry, decorating the eyes and lips in crystals, lace, and sequins. But the Givenchy spring 2014 show truly took this concept to the next level when McGrath and her team covered eight of the models' faces in intricate masks of Swarovski crystal and tulle.

      Alexander McQueen Spring 2015

"Femme bot fantasia realized in luxurious lacquer, a tribute to the future Fatale," McGrath says of this masked look at Alexander McQueen. The hand-made, lacquered masks were adhered to models' faces with none other than double-sided tape, the makeup artist reveals. “They're made out of plastic, and were sprayed about a hundred times to get them black, black, black,” McGrath explained to us a few years later. “I remember we had to get a hotel room and cover the whole room in plastic, there was even black spray paint on the ceiling.”

      Maison Margiela Fall 2015 Couture

McGrath's mastery in creating classically beautiful makeup looks is undeniable. But her talent doesn't end there. Here is an example of one of her more abstract looks seen at Maison Margiela. Consider it a study in Yves Klein Blue.

      Louis Vuitton Cruise 2016 Resort

McGrath's collection of reference books is the stuff of beauty legend. (She's admitted to traveling to shoots and fashion weeks with hundreds of them.) At Louis Vuitton's 2016 resort show in Palm Springs, we saw just how vast her sources are when she gave a nod to an obscure 1982 sci-fi movie by the name of Liquid Sky.

      Maison Margiela Spring 2016 Couture

Not long after the iconic singer passed away, McGrath paid homage to David Bowie with this embellished look at Margiela's spring 2016 couture show. "It was celestial couture meets intergalactic glamour, with a touch of Bowie's 'Space Oddity' brought to life with 3D metallic stars and a structured, gothic mouth with a touch of scarlet on the lower lip," she says.

      Givenchy Spring 2016

Revisiting her makeup masks, McGrath covered models' faces in pearls, shells, and beaded appliqués for  Givenchy's debut in New York City. "It was sinister-beauty-meets-grotesque-romance, a celebration of la beauté macabre," McGrath says. In 2015, she even gave us a behind-the-scenes look at how she crafted the lace-like adornments.

      Prada Spring 2016

This molten gold lip at Prada was groundbreaking for two reasons: First, it was a bold statement in a season of relatively minimal makeup. Secondly, it was the official debut of McGrath's very first product from her Pat McGrath Labs line: Gold 001. (When it was made available to the public, it sold out in 366 seconds.)

      Anna Sui Fall 2017

With glittery blue shadow and ruby-red lipstick, the look at Anna Sui drew from multiple references, including designer Elsa Schiaparelli, actress and author Elsie de Wolfe, and heiress Countess Dorothy di Frasso. It was also a sneak peek at the Pat McGrath Labs Dark Star 006: UltraViolet Blue kit.

      Anna Sui Spring/Summer 2018

Celebrating the couture of counter culture, McGrath adhered delicate, vertical stripes of silver glitter down each eye (with the help of Elizabeth Arden's Eight Hour Cream) and intentionally clumped together lashes. Anna Sui's ‘60s-inspired look was taken one step further with colorful daisies drawn on a selection of models' cheeks, showing to the world that you're never too old for face paint.

      Louis Vuitton Fall/Winter 2019

McGrath knows her way around the Galactic Empire. About five years after collaborating with CoverGirl and Max Factor on Star Wars-themed makeup lines (and looks titled "The Droid" and "Stormtrooper"), McGrath launched a collection under Pat McGrath Labs (in partnership with Disney) paying homage to her favorite franchise. She hinted at its arrival months earlier at Louis Vuitton. The Force was strong with this ultra-sharp look.

      Valentino Spring 2019 Couture

For the Valentino spring 2019 couture show, McGrath delved back into the world of feathered lashes with long, brow-obstructing quills that matched the models' gowns. The feather lash extensions were so carefully placed and fluttered so perfectly with each blink, they seemed to sprout directly from the models' onyx-lined eyes.

McGrath's mastery of uncommon color pairings was on full display on the runway at Maison Margiela fall/winter 2020. Swaths of lilac shadow were topped with severe strokes of tangerine brows. In true Pat fashion, the rest of the look was fresh and minimalist with sublimely luminous skin.

      Anna Sui Spring 2020

Just after the first season of Euphoria wrapped up, NYFW was in full swing, and "Euphoria makeup" was the phrase on everyone's lips. Instagram flooded with sparklier, more vibrant eye looks than ever, and the HBO show was given all the credit. So when McGrath revealed a fanciful look backstage at Anna Sui that season, someone was sure to ask if she was inspired by Euphoria. Anyone familiar with the looks previously listed in this gallery, however, would laugh at the question. As Allure beauty editor Devon Abelman wrote in an editorial at the time, Pat McGrath, in fact, invented the effervescent style of makeup that the show made popular.

      Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2020

McGrath didn't give any two models at Marc Jacobs' spring 2020 show the same look. Some got sprinkles of sparkles, others pepperings of rhinestones,  still others retro-inspired false lashes. One thing was consistent, though: Each look — and there were several dozen of them — was more over-the-top than the last.  “As each person from the cast walked in, we would decide who their character is,” Marc Jacobs explained later to Allure. Jacobs and McGrath, along with fashion stylist Katie Grand and hairstylist Guido, stayed up all night to pull it off. “We've had very very late nights before but this time we all stayed together until the show's call time the next day,” says Jacobs. “It was a glamathon. And the most memorable collaboration.”

The epitome of Pat McGrath's luxurious, unbridled approach to beauty took the runway at Valentino with this decadent gold eye look. Both models' brows and lids got the Midas Touch, complete with metallic pigments and jewels, for an unforgettable makeup moment in Paris for the spring 2020 season.
