For those who are obsessed with skin care, there are few feelings more unpleasant than applying a product to your face only to find that it leaves behind a sticky, heavy texture (the lone exception being honey masks, which are delightfully sticky...and obviously get rinsed off). Rather than glowing, moisturized skin, you're left with a texture that looks uneven under your makeup and a dense finish that you're entirely too aware of. I did not feel worried that Aveeno's Absolutely Ageless Intensive Renewal Serum would yield this unpleasant result, however, because I know Allure beauty editors' recommendations would never steer me wrong — and I was not disappointed.
This serum features a lightweight formula that felt a little slick when initially applied, but my skin drank it up quickly as I massaged it into my face (in circular motions, of course, just as my mom taught me to do with skin-care products years ago). My cheeks, which are the driest areas of my face, felt hydrated while my oilier nose, forehead, and eyelids felt radiant and dewy without the greasiness they have when I first wake up. I also applied the serum to my neck and décolleté, which I often get self-conscious about because they have a tendency to turn red and blotchy at times, but Aveeno's gentle serum gentle formula didn't irritate my skin at all and instead left it feeling soothed.
As with any skin-care product I use in the morning, it was important that the serum looked good underneath my makeup. On a typical day, my base makeup includes foundation, concealer, and translucent powder, so if a serum, moisturizer, or eye cream doesn't absorb smoothly and evenly, it isn't a wise addition to my routine. About 10 or so minutes after applying this serum for the first time, I began buffing on my favorite cocktail of clear sunscreen and medium-coverage foundation. It glided on as though I had used a lightweight primer, leaving my complexion looking smooth and even-toned — and leaving me totally convinced that this $20 serum deserves its Best of Beauty seal.
