I’m just going to go ahead and say it: I rarely use eye cream. In my 42 years on this earth (at least 20 as a regular skin-care user), I’ve done just fine tapping my regular serums, creams, and sunscreens up over my orbital bone. I’m careful not to rub anything onto my lashlines, my skin’s not particularly sensitive, and there’ve been no problems. Why bother with that extra little jar (and, god forbid, tiny spoon)?
But when I was tasked with testing the Context Skin Vitamin C All Day Eye Cream to see if it might be fabulous enough to make it into the Allure Beauty Box, I had to change my ways for a few weeks. Oh, don’t worry: I resisted. For several days, the stuff just sat on my desk, never making into my bag, and bathroom, and home routine. Then Liz Siegel, our deputy beauty director and Beauty Box taskmaster, walked by my office and glimpsed the little white tube lying there, untouched. We made eye contact; I picked up the tube. I squeezed out a dab and tapped it under my eyes, over my 3pm concealer. And, you guys: Where has this slightly cooling, makeup-crease smoothing magic been all my life? A few soft taps brightened everything up and evened out the late-day crustiness.
Needless to say: The tube made it into my bag that night. The next morning I tapped it in on again — this time pre-concealer. It’s an ace makeup base. First off: The Context eye cream is not a cream — it’s a gel. It dries quickly, but not tightly, and I noticed a slight de-puffing effect and subtle brightening. Its active ingredients are vitamin C and E, star antioxidants that guard against pigmentation and collagen breakdown.
So, there you have it: I use eye cream (really, gel) now. Two, actually: I keep a neat-and-tidy tube (no bitsy spoons here) at home for morning brightening and another on my desk that I can easily grab for mid-day smoothing… even when Liz isn’t prowling the floor.
You'll find this eye cream in our June 2019 Allure Beauty Box.
