CoverGirl may be best known for its very recognizable catchphrase ('easy, breezy, beautiful'...you know the rest). But it's also well known for having some of the best under $20 mascaras on the market: The LashBlast (both the volumizing formula and the Clump Crusher), the Super Sizer, even the old school mascara that simply said "Professional" on the tube. Well, the brand has added to their hard-working, money-saving mascara options with the Total Tease Mascara, which I tried out a few weeks after it launched.
At first, I honestly wasn’t so sure about this mascara because the plastic wand is not what I’m used to. I like when my lashes look full and voluminous, so I always choose a wand with fat, plushy bristles — like a caterpillar — because I find they work best to plump up my lashes. The Total Tease wand gave my lashes a whole new look and, surprisingly, I didn't hate it.
The best thing about this mascara is that it helps you achieve that no-makeup makeup effect. After using this I felt like I had my eyelashes freshly tinted even though I was wearing layers of mascara. This effect is thanks to the dual-sided wand with a traditional brush for covering all your lashes, and a teasing tip that helps with targeted application and separation for the smaller, hard to reach hairs (and also for building up any areas you feel look a little sparse). The spikes on each side are so precise, which allows the formula to go on smoothly and evenly, making your lashes look as elongated and natural as possible.
Using the full wand side first, I swiped on delicate layers of the mascara that made my lashes look separated yet fuller. Then with the teasing tip, I filled in any noticeable gaps, and ultimately tried to elongate my outer lashes as much as possible. And it's super easy to switch between the full wand side and the teasing tip side because both are just opposite each other on one end of the wand. No need to totally cap and switch between separate wands for each feature, which helps if you're always getting ready in a rush like me.
A key element for sure: the formula is super lightweight, so your lashes never feel heavy or look too overloaded. You're definitely not going to get a superdramatic lash look with this mascara, but you will wind up with clean and defined lashes. And no need to reapply throughout the day because it stays put on your lashes and nowhere else. It is available in a waterproof form, but I must say, the regular formula is pretty tough on its own, which is great for summers in New York City, and maybe the perfect solution for when you try not to wear makeup to the beach but you just can’t help yourself.
And now when you throw out your old mascara to try the new Total Tease, please donate your old wands to the Appalachian Wildlife Rescue in North Carolina, where your old wands will help clean the fur of rescued animals in need. The perfect reason to make the switch.
