TL;DR:
  • What It Is: A lightweight, cast-free chemical sunscreen with SPF 60
  • What It Does: Protects the skin without clogging it
  • Who It's For: All skin types and tones

Living in New York City for 15 years may be the best thing I've ever done for my skin. Yes, there is the pollution and the stress associated with city life, but there is also shade. Blocks and blocks of towering skyscrapers that create long beautiful swaths of shade. Not to mention snowstorms, rainy springs, and many cloudy summer days. I say this because now that I live in South Florida, I can't escape the sun. I know that may sound like a humble brag (and maybe it is...a little bit). But seriously: I cannot escape the sun.

Needless to say, sunscreen has taken on a whole new importance in my life*. I apply it first thing after I wash my face. Always on my face but also on my hands, chest, and neck. Then I reapply it in the afternoon. Same places. And I've been doing this every day for four years now, since I moved to Miami.

Year one was tough: I had many breakouts. My pores were gunked up and I responded by overexfoliating. Year two, I staged a mini revolt and got more sun than I should have; the damage started to show up on my forehead and chest (I know: BAD). Year three, I discovered this La Roche-Posay formula — and it was a revelation. The chemical filters (avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate) don't irritate my skin or clog my pores. And it's oil-free so it doesn't feel greasy on my skin.

Also: It's strong enough for a day at the beach but doesn't smell like a day at the beach; I don't feel weird when I wear it to a luncheon with heels. Now I have the best of both worlds: protection and sunshine. (And that, my friends, is a straight-up brag.)

*Before you freak out on me, let me say: I have always worn a daily sunscreen. But the level of protection I used to reserve for the beach has now become my standard.
