TL;DR:
  • What It Is: A smudge-proof volumizing mascara that makes lashes look thick and plush, yet never clumpy
  • What It Does: Adds volume, length, and dramatic definition to lashes
  • Who It's For: Anyone who loves a bold lash look

To be totally transparent with you guys, mascara hasn't been much of my jam this year. Like, I've maybe worn the stuff a total of 20 times, and even that might be pushing it.

Why bother putting it on if I'm not even going anywhere? has basically been my mindset when it comes to mascara — and most makeup in general — since March, you know, when the pandemic hit and human interaction more or less came to a crashing halt. I suppose I just stopped seeing the point, as woefully sad as that sounds now that I write it.

That being said, on the few occasions when I have put forth the effort, I've reached for one mascara, and one mascara only: the Marc Jacobs Beauty Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara in universal black.

The main thing I love about this mascara is how easy it makes it for someone like me, who has naturally short lash hairs, to get an ultra-dramatic effect. For instance, it only takes one coat of its thickening formula to see a significant difference in my lashes — whereas, with other mascaras, I typically have to use several coats to get the level of intensity I'm looking for. And if I add two or three layers, it actually lowkey looks like I'm wearing falsies, which I haven't found in many other mascaras out there.

Here's a fun fact for you: According to its site, the brand actually formulated this mascara based on a beauty memory that's stuck with Marc Jacobs since he was young. According to the designer, his mother would use velvet ribbons to create beautiful couture false lashes, and he would hang around and watch the entire process in amazement.

Inspired by the luxurious look of velvet, he wanted the formula to be rich, glossy, and highly pigmented — that, and for it to deliver mega length and volume, with minimal effort involved. And well, I suppose I'm here to tell you they succeeded. It uses what the brand calls its "Flash Volume Complex" to lengthen and volumize my lashes in one fell swoop, and it feels featherlight and comfortable to wear.

Another reason this mascara reigns supreme? It sticks around all damn day without smudging, flaking, or fading. I kid you not: When I wear it, my lashes look just as fluffy and plush at 9 p.m. as they did when I first applied it at 9 a.m. And when it comes down to it, that's really all I'm asking for in a mascara. No wonder it won a 2020 Allure Best of Beauty Award.
