TL;DR:
  • What It Is: A protein-rich conditioner for curly, kinky hair
  • What It Does: Strengthens brittle curls
  • Who It's For: People with damaged, dry hair

Since I went natural in 2012, SheaMoisture has been a staple brand in my natural hair-care routine. Though I've switched out a few products in my regimen over the years, SheaMoisture's conditioners have always worked well on my 4a/4b curl texture. It comes as no surprise then that the brand's Manuka Honey & Yogurt Hydrate + Repair Conditioner is an Allure 2018 Best of Beauty Award winner.

This conditioner is made for extremely dry and brittle strands, so if you’re always fighting to keep moisture in your hair (as with most kinky textures) or you just have a lot of damage, this stuff should be right up your alley. It also contains reconstructive proteins that rebuild and strengthen hair, which is great for me because I like to include a protein treatment in my regimen. Some treatments are too harsh for my hair, but this conditioner is the perfect in-between: It's not really a treatment, per se, but more a shot of protein to hold me over until the next time I'm ready for the real thing. I used this conditioner on wash day after taking out a protective style and immediately noticed a difference in my strands. My hair felt stronger, with more elasticity, and without that dry, hay-like feeling you can get with full-on protein treatments.

The only drawback is that this conditioner doesn't give my hair enough slip. With kinky-curly textures like mine, detangling is a huge part of keeping my hair healthy. Even after working this conditioner through my ends and leaving it on as I moved to the next section, I still struggled to run a wide-tooth comb through it. If your hair has a kinkier texture, I recommend doing some serious pre-poo detangling (DevaCurl's Wash Day Wonder is a good one) so that this conditioner isn’t doing all the work. Beyond that, Manuka Honey & Yogurt Hydrate + Repair Conditioner definitely fulfills its purpose to help repair your strands. It smells amazing and the manuka honey leaves a natural, healthy shine. And the best part? It'll only cost you around 10 bucks.
