Both Nelson and Noel have led colorful careers in beauty; and together, they help the up-and-comers brush up on their makeup skills with some of the tips and tricks they’ve picked up along the way. Noel shares her best advice for making your products work extra hard: Use moisturizing eye patches instead of tape when applying eye shadow to prep the skin and catch any fallout; add a few drops of liquid highlighter to your foundation for an effortless lit-from-within glow; or better yet, a loose powder highlighter in your setting spray for the same illuminating effect.
For a “polished, professional look,” Nelson’s approach is all about preparation. Before anything else, he urges recruits to always moisturize and prime for flawless application that will last throughout the day. And when it comes to coverage, start with a thin layer and build where you need it.
With that, Allure editor in chief, Michelle Lee, challenges the recruits to take what they’ve learned from the pros and create a social story about their version of #SelfieSkin. But she urges the recruits to proceed with caution: “People underestimate how challenging this look is to execute,” explains Lee. “It is a highly technical makeup look, and it is going to require you to use every tip and trick you’ve mastered.”
Let’s just say that not every recruit was thrilled about the challenge. “I feel panicky,” admits Bethany Salmons of BethanyFae Beauty. “I have acne and freckles, and I don’t want to cover those, because that’s not what I normally do.”
But others went into the challenge feeling pretty confident: “I focus a lot on making sure my skin looks smooth and camera-ready, and this should be no problem,” says Kenneth Senegal of HeFlawless.
