We Tried Cetaphil’s New Sheer Hydration Body Moisturizers — Editor Reviews

The body lotion and body spray in the Cetaphil Sheer Hydration collection are formulated to feel lightweight, yet super hydrating, using ultra-nourishing ingredients (hyaluronic acid, sunflower seed oil, and vitamin E). So we decided to take them for a test drive to see if they truly delivered on the promise of long-lasting hydration.

Cetaphil Sheer Hydration Body Spray Moisturizer and Replenishing Body Lotion

Hydration is one of the most essential steps for keeping our largest organ, our skin, in check — and moisturizing is just as important for the skin on our bodies as it is for that on our faces. So it’s about time our body care was supercharged with the same trusted formulas we use on our complexions.

“Facial moisturizers tend to have more key ingredients like hyaluronic acid, but not many body moisturizers feature the same ingredients,” says Dendy Engelman, a dermatologist in New York City. But Cetaphil’s new Sheer Hydration collection has bottled some of skin care’s most effective and moisturizing ingredients — including hydrator-hero hyaluronic acid, antioxidant-rich vitamin E, reparative vitamin B5, and soothing sunflower seed oil — to keep skin supple without the heavy or greasy feel you often find from a cream or ointment. While designed to feel weightless, says Tiffany J. Libby, a dermatologist in South Kingstown, Rhode Island, the line still delivers intense lasting hydration to nourish the skin for 48 hours.

Both the Sheer Hydration Replenishing Body Lotion and Sheer Hydration Body Spray Moisturizer pack a big punch: “They contain Cetaphil’s newest innovative HydroSensitiv™ Complex that helps soothe skin sensitivity, so not only do they deliver long-lasting hydration, but they also improve the quality of sensitive skin over time,” explains Engelman. All products are dermatologist-tested, paraben-free, non-comedogenic, and formulated for sensitive skin. “Once adequately hydrated and moisturized, many patients with sensitive skin types will notice their symptoms disappear,” adds Libby. “All they needed was to help restore and repair their skin's moisture barrier.”

We asked two Allure editors to upgrade their body-care routines, so below, you’ll learn how the brand’s Sheer Hydration moisturizers improved their skin, both instantly and over time.

Body-Care Minimalist

Beauty Editor: Paige Stables | Regimen: Not as comprehensive as facial skin-care regimen | Pain point: Time-consuming application process

One of my favorite beauty rituals after a long day is to unwind in the evening with a candlelit bath, especially in the wintertime. (A warm tub on a cold day is pure bliss.) It’s the ultimate form of relaxation for my body. There’s only one major downside: It can seriously dry out my skin.

But I’ve learned there’s one definitive way I can prevent that from happening. Immediately after bathing, I make sure to rehydrate my skin, and as it turns out, post-bath is also the best time to moisturize: “Water is already infused into your skin, and by applying the moisturizer right away, you’re helping to seal and lock in the moisture,” says Libby.

Recently, I’ve been reaching for Allure 2020 Best of Beauty winner, Cetaphil Sheer Hydration Replenishing Body Lotion, a long-lasting formula to complete my nighttime body-care routine and keep my skin silky-soft for days. I massage on a few pumps of the sophisticated serum-esque, featherlight formula and it sinks into my skin within a few seconds. Because of its non-oily finish, I’m able to slip right into my pajamas stain- and grease-free. And since I’ve been using it consistently, I also wake up to my skin feeling cashmere-soft. The best part: This deep hydration lasts for a full 48 hours.

When it comes to my skin-care routine, I would never skip face moisturizer, but the same hasn’t always been true for body moisturizer. On mornings when I’m in a rush, my body-care is the first step to go. The mere thought of layering lotion on every limb can sound exhausting, and that’s not to mention the time it can take for some products to fully absorb into the skin.

Since adding Cetaphil’s Sheer Hydration Body Spray Moisturizer to my routine, I no longer have an excuse. Nothing compares to the convenience of this spray design: In 10 seconds or less, I can cover my entire body with a mist of intense hydration. I especially love it for hard-to-reach areas like my back, which sometimes doesn’t get the attention it deserves. Full disclosure: Minimal effort is required to rub it in, but it dried down so quickly that the process only took an extra 10 seconds at most.

And though it goes on as a fine mist, it’s loaded with the same skin-loving ingredients you would find in a deeply nourishing facial cream, but without the thick, sticky feel. Thanks to these hard-working ingredients, the hydration lasts for 48 hours. So after just one application,my parched skin stays quenched for days.

Body-Care Maximalist

Beauty Editor: Kat Suico | Regimen: Super comprehensive body-care regimen | Pain point: Finding non-irritating formulas

I learned the importance of taking care of my skin at a very young age. When I was growing up, dry patches covered almost every inch of my body. I’ve had sensitive, itchy, and flakey skin for a good portion of my early life, and I tried everything to help treat it. I routinely took oatmeal baths and covered myself in ointments to help calm my irritated skin, while my mom stressed applying a body moisturizer right after every shower. In the years since, the right lotion has become key to minimizing my flare-ups from happening. It’s no surprise, then, that I’ve always been picky when it comes to lotions, but Cetaphil’s Sheer Hydration Replenishing Body Lotion checked all the boxes.

Sheer Hydration is everything I look for in a body moisturizer: It’s lightweight, and my skin drinks it up immediately. When I first tested it out, I was, admittedly, skeptical that a formula this thin could nourish my sensitive skin, but I was wrong. "Cetaphil uses its HydroSensitiv™ Complex to soothe skin, plus hyaluronic acid — a molecule that has the ability to hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water — to keep my skin moisturized all day." And even if I apply too much, the formula never feels greasy — it just leaves my skin hydrated, with a subtle fresh scent that doesn’t irritate my dry patches.

Growing up with dry sensitive skin meant using up a lot of body moisturizer. I learned to diligently apply creams, lotions, and oils all over my body the minute I got out of the shower. And after trying just about every sensitive-skin-safe product on the shelf, I can now tell almost instantly what’s going to work. When I tried Cetaphil’s Sheer Hydration Body Moisturizer Spray, I knew it was for me.

I love that the spray nozzle gives me control of how much product I use and helps me target hard-to-reach areas. It’s so precise that it proved to be a far less messy process than traditional pumps. Plus, if I ever need to touch up throughout the day or reapply after a midday workout, it’s the perfect, quick solution to soothe dryness on-the-go.

Since incorporating Cetaphil’s Sheer Hydration Replenishing Body Lotion and Body Spray Moisturizer into their daily routines, these Allure Editors have been reminded that with the right ingredients, body care doesn’t have to feel heavy to be hydrating. And as temperatures are beginning to drop (which also means the moisture in our skin will inevitably decline), they’ll be preventing dry, itchy skin with these two skin saviors on hand. Cetaphil’s Sheer Hydration products are all you’ll need to keep your skin from your neck to your toes looking — and feeling — its very best all year round.
