How a 3-Time WNBA All-Star Uses Beauty to Balance Life On and Off the Court

Professional athlete. Newlywed. Fashion lover. Beauty enthusiast. NBA player Skylar Diggins-Smith is the epitome of multi-hyphenate. But the point guard of the Dallas Wings can define her life in two parts: on the court and off.

One major challenge is balancing her time between the strenuous needs of the sport and her demanding extracurriculars. Striking this balance is not easy.

On the court, Diggins-Smith is “competitive,” “fierce” and “focused on winning a championship.” And off the court, she focuses on the other parts of her life that don’t require the same intensity. “I like to joke, I like to laugh,” she says. It’s an opportunity for her to nurture her relaxed, care-free attitude and enjoy dressing up for a night out with her husband, socializing with peers at an awards show or relaxing at home with a facial treatment.

The professional athlete credits a mix of self-care rituals to keep her head in the game and in the right mental space. “Taking care of myself is the game before the game. It helps me set my mind up for whatever’s next,” she says.

Below, Diggins-Smith discusses three ways beauty and self care help her be her best self both on and off the court:

LOOK GOOD, FEEL GOOD, PLAY GOOD: The WNBA star, known for her model looks and stylish fashion sense, says she opts for a light touch of product during games. “Sometimes a little mascara, a little moisturizer. Maybe a little bronzer on the cheeks. Nothing too much--I like to be light and myself.” As Diggins-Smith explains, “You look good, you feel good, you play good.”

TAKE TIME TO RESET BODY AND MIND: Skin care is a big part of the athlete’s beauty line-up. “I sweat every day. I work out every day. Keeping my skin clean and fresh is important and necessary,” she says. When both her body and skin feel fatigued, Diggins-Smith makes an effort to restore their balance with a daily cleansing and moisturizing routine.

In addition, one product Diggins-Smith uses is Aveeno’s Positively Radiant 60 Second In-Shower Facial. “Even if I only have a minute, that’s enough time to take care of my skin.”

It works with the steam of the shower to exfoliate dirt and dead skin. In just one minute, the facial leaves her complexion looking bright and velvety— an easy beauty ritual that fits the athlete’s busy schedule. “In 60 seconds, [my face] feels like I went to the spa,” she says.

UNDERSTAND BALANCE IS AN EVER-EVOLVING THING: Diggins-Smith says achieving balance is something she’s constantly working on, and self-care is helping her find it. “I don’t achieve balance every single day. It’s a long-term goal for me. But it’s about prioritizing, time management, having a great support system, and pampering yourself sometimes.”
