There’s nothing like longer days and warmer weather signaling that summer is finally here. As sweaters and leather boots make way for bikinis and flip flops, summer makeup transitions from dark colors and heavier products to lighter shades and lightweight formulas. Hair, too, is more carefree—think wash-and-go curls and loose buns or braids, the more strands framing the face, the better. To celebrate, Target asked three beauty and hair bloggers to walk through a key summer beauty look they could wear from a casual smoothie run to a dinner date with friends that lingers past sunset. Below, New York-based hair guru Curly Edgy walks us through a three-step curly hair routine that can last throughout an entire summer day.
Step One: Loose Curls
“My summer hair routine is based on the weather,” says Edgy. “If it’s hot, [my hair] is going up. If it’s cool, it’s definitely coming down.” Edgy’s favorite summer style is to leave her golden ringlets loose—not to mention healthy and shiny with leave-in conditioning spray. Simply spritz, working through hair with your fingers for the best body and sheen. “It gives me hydration, moisture, and definition,” says Edgy.
Step Two: Two Front Twists
For a more styled curly look that’s great for a daytime summer party, consider two front twists, a two-minute style that looks deceivingly fancy, but only takes three easy steps. Section the front part of your hair from the crown towards your neck. Apply leave-in conditioner to each section, and twist along the hairline towards the back of your head. Pin each section with bobby pins to anchor each twist.
Step Three: Two Twists and a Bun
For those really hot summer nights, gather the rest of your loose curls into a low bun. The two twists frame your face while the bun keeps your curls off of your neck. “It’s great for a fun summer night out,” says Edgy. After setting your two front twists, grab the rest of your loose curls and twist them into a bun. Wrap a hair tie around the bun to keep it in place, keeping strands along the hairline neat with an oil-based edge tamer for the ultimate shine. Now your hair is not only ready for heat, humidity, and anything else summer throws at you, but it looks chic and sexy.
