Bella Hadid's MTV VMAs Porcupine Hairstyle Is So '90s It Hurts

If they played Sixpence None the Richer at your prom, you've probably worn this hairstyle at least once.

The ‘90s are certainly having a moment at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards — in the hair department, that is. Host Keke Palmer has already served her best Freaknik realness and given us the flipped-up ponytail with matching bayang of our dreams. But Bella Hadid would not be left out on the fun and turned out to the VMAs with a ’90s hair look of her own.

The model (virtually) presented Lady Gaga with the very first MTV Trichon Award and she did it with thee hairstyle beloved by promgoers circa 1996 to 1999. Yes — it's exactly what you're thinking. The porcupine updo that everybody wore back in the day, except this one, regrettably, did not come with butterfly clips.

You can thank the brilliant Evanie Frausto for this look, which along with the black cutout and mesh getup (put together by stylist Carlos Nazario) Hadid is wearing, is very hot goth girl. Also: did anyone notice that her hair looks a little darker here, too?

Her cat-eye makeup, also done by Frausto, is super defined on the lower lash line, and far smokier on the lid — the perfect complement to this hair. Hadid posted a behind-the-scenes look at the entire ensemble.

If this look is giving you visions of Kirsten Dunst, it's because she wore a similar style to the Wag the Dog premiere in 1997: Her vibe was more Legally Blonde than that time the Fashion Club from Daria went alternative. And yes, butterfly clips were involved then.

But throwback flourishes or no, we're loving Hadid's hair and this sense of nostalgia she so graciously served us on this fine Sunday evening.
