With so much of our time spent at home these days due to the on-going pandemic, it can be hard to find the motivation to actually do our hair — especially when we can quickly just throw it back or up and call it a day. This weekend though, Tia Mowry reminded us just how easy it is to add some flair to a simple updo. She did so in a stunning new selfie in which she's sporting a top knot that's casually decked out in crystal appliqués.
The 42-year-old actor and cookbook author shared the aforementioned photo via her Instagram grid on Saturday, January 9, along with the caption: "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent. Remember that! Love y'all! #topknot Eleanor Roosevelt."
Unfortunately, neither Mowry nor Kimble revealed how the top knot was executed, albeit it appears to be pretty straightforward. If you're interested in trying this look at home, here's what you can do. First, simply pull your hair up into a sleek top knot, using bobby pins as necessary to secure any loose pieces. At this point, you can also use a gel to slick down any flyaways (these are some of our favorites for curly hair) or to help sculpt your edges.
Then, for the fun part: Add your crystals or gems (whatever you've got on hand) throughout the bun, both in the knot itself, as well as in the front section of your hair. There's a wide variety of sparkly hair appliqués available on Amazon, including these cool spiral pins that stay in place well so you won't have to worry about them falling out throughout the day.
We love this look because it's easy enough for anyone with medium or long hair to recreate at home — and because it's a super-fun, yet simple way to spice up your basic high bun. Needless to say, you should definitely try this style if, like us, you're looking for a way to get out of a rut with your hair this winter.
